03: PROJECT "NUMB"
An Explanation Of The Project
The project “Numb” aims to shed light by discussing the increasingly prevalent phenomenon of desensitisation, portraying a “numb” vision of the future, where an overload of information diminishes our emotional responsiveness and ability to process and empathise with the suffering of others fully.
In our rapidly advancing technological era, while the rise of digital media and the 24/7 news cycle has made information more accessible, contributing undeniable benefits, such as increased awareness and connectivity, it also comes with drawbacks. With a constant stream of news, often focusing on adverse events, we are exposed to an overwhelming array of distressing, violent stories, tragedies, and crises. Bombarding our senses, this flood of information can result in "desensitisation." In the case of exposure to the overload of media violence portrayed on news channels and social media, people become “comfortably numb” to the pain and suffering of others, as explained by Bushman and Anderson (2009).
